There’s much confusion when it comes to the ownership of Hotpoint, and it’s easy to assume Whirlpool is the main owner of the brand. But we did our research and found that the answer is a bit more complicated than that. In North America, Hotpoint is actually owned by GE Appliances, specifically their North American division.
Whereas in Europe, Whirlpool has ownership of the brand and their products. There’s a lot of interesting history behind Hotpoint and its unique position in the market of appliances. Here at Suwanee Appliance Garage, we dive deeper into the company’s history and provide an insider look at what makes their line of electric and gas ranges, washers and dryers, and refrigerators worth a look in your search for the right appliance brand for your home.
Here’s a Hotpoint refrigerator we installed a while back for one of our many customers, who was very happy and satisfied with his purchase.
The History of Hotpoint and Hotpoint Electric Heating Company
Hotpoint began as the Hotpoint Electric Heating Company back in 1911. It’s crazy to imagine how long this brand has lasted for over a century. The company was the brainchild of two bright inventors named Earl Richardson and George A. Hughes. Earl, a Canadian native, and George, an American, teamed up in 1918, building on their earlier successes by experimenting with new home appliances. Richardson was the one who came up with the Hotpoint, which was a lighter version of the electric iron people used back then. It was named the Hotpoint because of where the “hot point” was in the iron. Rather than being in the center, it was in the front end of the iron instead.
While Richardson was streamlining the iron, Hughes was busy perfecting what would become the first electric range oven. It took him years of failed experiments to come up with a working electric range ready to be sold. Once these two visionaries joined forces, it was full steam ahead for Hotpoint.
Various Mergers and Acquisitions in Hotpoint History
Also, by 1918, General Electric and Hotpoint merged, and a new division was born: the Edison Electric Appliance Company. GE still owns the brand now in the United States, but things took a different turn in the UK and Europe when back in 2014, Whirlpool purchased a 56% stake in the brand. In 2016, the Haier Group bought GE Appliances, the parent company of Hotpoint in the US for $5.4 billion according to USA Today:
The acquisition of GE’s home appliance business, however, will outshine all of those investments, giving the company a major foothold in the U.S. market. The terms of the sale mean that the Chinese company gets to use one of America’s most storied brand names for the next 40 years.
“They’ve been trying to make inroads into the US for some time,” said Bob Baird, merchandising vice president for Home Depot, which carries both Haier small appliances and GE major appliances. “Clearly, this is the ticket that gets it done real fast.”
So the story behind Hotpoint is even more complicated than we thought. Hotpoint in Europe and the US is the same brand, but you can think of it as joint ownership between Whirlpool and Haier depending on the geographic location. We know, it can get a bit confusing but that’s why we’re here to clear everything up for our readers.
With this history lesson settled, let’s talk more about what makes Hotpoint such a great brand to consider buying.
The Benefits of Hotpoint Appliances
One of the biggest reasons people buy Hotpoint appliances is because they are some of the cheaper home appliances you can buy while still delivering on quality. You can often find the Hotpoint brand discounted heavily at your local Lowes for example. We saw a Hotpoint electric range priced at just $479, with retail price being around $649 USD!
But cheap doesn’t mean poor quality by any means. We’ve sold Hotpoint refrigerators and other appliances under the brand and found them to be very easy to maintain and fix. If you’ve had good experiences with General Electric’s products, you should have little to no issues with getting your Hotpoint appliance to work.
The other benefits of buying Hotpoint appliances can be summed up in several ways:
1. Excellent warranty (1 year warranty and 10-year warranty on various parts)
2. High customer satisfaction overall
3. Very energy efficient compared to other brands on the market
4. Generally well made for the price
We can attest to much of this because we bought a Hotpoint electric range ourselves that was on sale recently for the holiday season and it’s been doing an incredible job. Our old GE electric range wasn’t working anymore, water was leaking from the bottom and trying to cook rice, and even french fries was a hassle.
It wouldn’t get hot enough so we were left with a serious problem where our family wasn’t being served the nice homecooked meals that these ranges are capable of. So yes, we not only sell appliances here in Atlanta, but use them ourselves.
With our new Hotpoint stove, it came with manufacturer warranty from GE themselves, which we have saved for future reference.
Hotpoint Appliance Reviews from Satisfied Customers
It’s because of these factors many people are happy and satisfied with their Hotpoint appliance purchases. You can see for yourself based on reviews such as this:
“I read a lot of reviews about a lot of different ranges, really cheap to pretty expensive. My oven heating element caught on fire and I needed to replace my Kenmore range. The only thing I wanted for sure was an oven door window. I wasn’t sure about a glass top but when I read the problems with the new safety coil burners, glass top it was. The GE was my choice because the reviews weren’t paid for and no one got a free range to review. Real people loved the GE and told the reasons. Not only did I read the reviews on the Lowe’s site online, but I went to another site selling this same range and read their reviews. The burner heating numbers are a learning curve for me and I have burned several things (eggs and a pot of brown beans). The oven, I put through the ultimate test, which was my pumpkin rolls. In fact I make two at a time and my old range caught on fire in the middle of cooking the first one and the second was ready to cook.( I drove to town and cooked them at our church.) I fixed the two pans and noticed the oven was bigger and I could cook them both at the same time! I did, and they came out perfect in 15 minutes exactly what their cooking time is supposed to be. Would I recommend this range to anyone needing a new one? You betcha I would! I have not been paid for this review and I paid for my range myself. I was raised old school, and I usually don’t write reviews unless something is really, really bad, or really, really good. I love mine and would purchase this one again given a choice of any other one to choose from.”
This is from one of the verified reviews on the Lowes website and not directly on the manufacturer’s website, so it’s a safe bet that this is an actual customer experience you can trust.
That’s another reason why we do what we do here on the blog. We want to provide accurate information on all your favorite appliance brands so you can have a better understanding of what to look for in your next home appliance purchase. Thus far, you can’t go wrong with purchasing one of Hotpoint’s products.
But let’s talk about the downsides of Hotpoint so you have a more balanced perspective on who they are as a company and what their product quality is like.
The Cons of Hotpoint Appliances
Hotpoint appliances are not without their downsides. For the same reasons many people love them, there’s a perception out there that their brand is not up to snuff compared to the likes of LG and Samsung. Appliance technicians love Hotpoint appliances for their repairability, but according to Reddit, many people find their appliances to be bare-bones and ugly.
The main complaint is that they don’t have as many features as some of the other brands, even compared to GE Appliances sold in the United States. Furthermore, their products are classified as the lower end of the spectrum with pricing and give a perception that they aren’t worth buying. To us, most of these complaints are on the superficial side, but we understand if their appliances aren’t your bag.
Real Hotpoint Appliance Complaints from Customers
We did find some legitimate complaints about Hotpoint however, mainly that their appliances tend to die after three years for some. ARoseTintedWorld says their Hotpoint fridge went out and was one of many reasons why they would never purchase a Hotpoint product again:
I have had other Hotpoint appliances. And I will say I have been underwhelmed again. They just don’t seem to last very long. My last Hotpoint fridge died after just 3 years. And even though I have had two freezers, both have tended to over freeze and need completely defrosting far more regularly. Which is why I’ll never buy another Hotpoint appliance. Nor an Indesit, Creda, Proline or Swan.
This review came from someone who has had experience with using Hotpoint products in the UK. For this article, we are going to assume that besides ownership, the refrigerators and other products made under the Hotpoint brand are similar in quality to what we get here in the States.
There are plenty of other brands out there if you’re looking for more high-end products with more features built in. But for a family on a budget, we highly recommend the Hotpoint brand overall. Just be wary of any recalls and make sure that you look at the manufacturer for more information about their specific warranty.
Hotpoint’s line of appliances is meant to target the consumer looking for maximum value on a budget. They are not the fanciest appliances you can buy, but they get the job done and are very easy to repair.
